With the Stamp Duty holiday still in force in Wales and across the UK, the home moving industry is booming! For the Operations team, at Masons Removals, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day. As part of our Inside a Family Business Series, we recently introduced you to Brett Mason, one of our Directors and Steve Jones, our longest serving team member with 46 years of service under his belt. There are lots of other hidden gems behind the scenes here at Masons though, and it’s thanks to them that the cogs keep turning and how we can ensure that our customers’ big ‘Moving Day’ goes smoothly.
One of those hidden gems is Richard Mason, our Operations Director who is primarily responsible for removals within the UK as well as commercial removals. Richard has also been the main contact for much of the NHS work that is contracted to Masons Removals including most recently, the moving of all of the equipment and furniture needed for the temporary Dragonheart Hospital, that was based at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff.
Read on to find out more about Richard, the work he does behind the scenes here at Masons Removals and discover more about this big-hearted, family-man!
Inside a Family Business: Richard Mason, Operations Director at Masons Removals Cardiff & Wales
Richard originally had aspirations to train as a mechanic. However, he was fifteen when his father, Eric Mason, died and he decided to join his brothers in the family business. He has now been working for Masons for 36 years!
Starting out as a porter on the vans, Steven Jones taught Richard everything he knew. What we love about our family business, is that our team is just as much a part of our family with or without the Masons name, Steven Jones has been with us for an incredible 46 years!
Richard spent 12 years working on the vans before going to study Surveying at the British Association of Removers (BAR) Headquarters in London, where he received his surveyors’ qualifications. Richard stayed surveying for around five years. By this time, Brett had moved into the office as our Operations Manager. So, Richard undertook more training, completing his Certificate of Professional Competence and moved into the office too as our Transport Manager.
It was around this time that Richard took on more responsibility in the day-to-day running of Masons Removals Cardiff & Wales; as well as preparing for the future of the business, soon after, he took a Directorship in the company!
We asked Richard, what does your average day look like?
My main focus is our Commercial and UK branches of the business. I’m responsible for a lot of planning! So, I map out plans for our vehicles, ensuring that our team is up to speed for their daily jobs and getting them out on time! I then plan for the next day as well as the week ahead. Plus, I make sure that we respond to all inquiries in a timely manner and communicate with our customers. When replying to enquiries, we spend a lot of time creating detailed quotes for our customers, so that can take up lots of time in my day. I also communicate with our self-storage clients and oversee the depot.
And what do you love about your job?
I love the daily challenge, making sure everybody knows where they’re going and getting them there on time. I also really love the communication and customer service aspect of my role, I spend a lot of time talking to the public!
How has the industry changed over the past 36 years?
People have so much more furniture than they used to have! In fact, we all have more stuff in general! Plus, people’s expectations have also increased, due to the rise of ‘man and van’ services means that sometimes people don’t understand what goes into a professional removal service and the expert training our team has undertaken. Thankfully, our customers are consistently impressed with our outstanding team and their professionalism.
Although Masons Removals Cardiff & Wales keeps Richard pretty busy, in his spare time, he tries to stay very active! He loves a game of golf and tries to get to the gym three times a week (at least when there isn’t a lockdown!). He also plays table tennis at a competitive level for the Cardiff League; his team are in the Vale Academy and he plays for the A team who are currently at the top of the league!
Although Richard feels like he’s re-found his youth since discovering table tennis two years ago, his main passion is his family, in fact, Richard and his wife, Michelle, helped to deliver baby Bella! Richard is known as Bamby to Bella, Emilie (13) and Chelsie (5). As well as to another new addition to the family, baby Joseph, from son, Danny, and daughter-in-law, Sam!
