Here at Masons Removals Cardiff, we are an incredibly tight-knit bunch! We all have incredibly fond memories of our father, Eric Mason, taking the whole team out on Christmas Eve before back to our house in Barry for a steak dinner that our mother, Esme, had cooked. Always a little merry, we found it hilarious as children. A fourth generation of Masons is now taking over the reins, but we’re determined to keep the same closeness within our team that our father and grandfather created.
Our whole team is like family to us and we’re pleased to say our team feels the same, as many of them have been with us for years. The longevity of our team is something we’re very proud of! In this instalment of ‘Inside a Family Business’, we’re celebrating one of our unsung heroes that has been part of the Masons family since 1974 and was always a favourite at the Masons Christmas Eve dinners: Steve Jones from Ely, Cardiff!
Meet our Team: Steve Jones
Steve first started with Masons back in 1974, when he was just 18! He started off as a Porter but very quickly, Eric had promoted him to driving the Luton transit van. Masons have always been very active in supporting the Armed Forces, but Steve in particular worked on a lot of the RAF jobs at St Athan, predominantly staying in Barry and the Vale.
Steve actually left Masons once! He left us in around 1985 as he wanted to see what it would be like to drive the big lorries, so he went to work in general haulage. It was incredibly tiring and very lonely, but he stuck at it for five years, wanting to experience something new. One time, he remembers being so tired that he looked at his bunk and said: ‘I’ll be with you soon…’. However, in 1990, Steve had a meeting with Gordon and 30 years later, he’s still a very valued part of our team!
Keen to find out the secret to a long and happy career, we jumped on a job with Steve and the boys, and gave him a break whilst we asked him a few questions!
So, Steve, tell us, what do you love about your job?
For me, it’s the camaraderie that makes Masons such a great place to work. Ask any of the guys, it’s the team and the feeling of belonging, if anyone leaves, they always come back because they miss the crack with the boys!
I also love meeting new people every day, it’s so nice to know that our customers are going through a stressful time, because let’s face it, moving home isn’t great, and we can just make that a little easier and that day go a little bit smoother. Plus, we’re out and about getting to see different places, which is fantastic!
I love the trust and relationship at Masons, I have years of experience and I can feel that there is confidence in me that the job is getting done. It’s such a great place to be a part of.
And what don’t you love as much?
I’m 64 this year and my knees are starting to have an impact on my work, I’m no longer as good at the heavy lifting as I used to but thankfully Brett looks after me and puts me on the easier jobs.
The three months in lockdown were almost like a little taster of retirement! Although it meant that when Brett called to say that Masons were ready to start again, I was almost apprehensive, would I be up for such a physical job after three months?! Although I did stay active during lockdown, I would take the stairs in my block of flats, walking from my flat on the 3rd floor, up to the 7th and then back down to the ground, before back to mine on the 3rd floor.
It’s been such an unusual year, what with lockdown and then converting offices into hospital wards and back to offices again.
What do you get up to outside of work?
I have two daughters and two grandsons, 8-year-old Rhys and 8-month old Lloyd Dylan Jones, they all live nearby so I get to see my grandchildren on the weekends. I also love the International Rugby! I used to be a big fan of rough shooting, although I don’t do as much of that anymore.
We’re so thrilled to have Steve as part of our team! It’s a really heart-warming feeling to know that Masons is such a great place to work that our team stays for years, and even decades!
